This is an older article from June of this year, but I just now happened to stumble upon it. How I would love to do something like this!
It’s a thorough review by Jim Clark at WeGotServed of a Windows Home Server DIY solution using:
- The Norco RPC-4220 server / disk array combined case
- One 3ware Multi-lane Internal SFF-8087 Serial ATA Reverse Breakout Cables to connect the 4 SATA ports on the motherboard’s controller to one SFF-8087 port on the Norco hard drive backplane, which feeds a row of 4 hard drives
- Six MASSCOOL FD08025S1M4 80mm Case Fans
For Controller Card expansion opportunities:
- Jim mentions using HighPoint RR3540 PCI-Express x8 SATA Controller Card, which has 4 SFF-8087 ports, so 4 Mini-SAS 36-pin SFF-8087 to Mini-SAS 36-pin SFF-8087 cables could be used to connect to 4 Norco hard drive backplane SFF-8087 ports resulting in a 4 row, 16 hard drives solution! Sweet!
- In one of the comments, a poster mentions the Super Micro SASLP-MV8 PCI-Express x4 Controller Card, which has 2 SSF-8087 ports, which would result in a 8 hard drive solution
He also mentions this intriguing 57″ high x 24″ wide x 30″ deep SKELETEK C28U-4P-EX16 rack mount kit for the 7″ high x 19″ wide x 25.5″ deep Norco and more.
